Worlds 8 Fastest accelerating cars
What’s the point in having a 250mph car when the motorway speed limit is 70mph? It’s not all about top speed for petrolheads – for some it’s the exhilaration of rocketing from 0-60mph in under three seconds.
Adrian Hearn looks at the world’s fastest accelerating production cars ever.
Bugatti Veyron
The ultimate hypercar holds almost every record. It’s the world’s fastest (253mph), world’s most expensive (£830,000) and it’s also the fastest accelerating production car on the planet. Bugatti have fitted the Veyron with an 8-litre W16 engine launching it from 0-60mph in 2.46 seconds.

Caparo T1
A Formula One car for the road, the Caparo T1 is a lightning-quick run around. It isn’t the 3.5-litre V8 which does all the work, it’s the fact it weighs just 470kg, meaning 1,000bhp per ton. The £300,000 go-kart-like-car rockets to the 60mph mark in 2.5 seconds.

Ultima GTR
The little-known British hypercar is designed by Lee Noble, a engineering genius who worked on the legendary McLaren F1. The GTR is fitted with a Chevrolet V8, which has been tuned to produce 720bhp. The result is a sizzling-quick 0-60mph time of 2.6 seconds.

Dauer 962 Le Mans
The Le Mans legend was transformed for the road with breathtaking results. Under a 3-litre engine, Dauer managed to pack 720bhp thanks to two whopping turbochargers with separate intercoolers. Weighing a meagre 1,080kg meant the 962 could accelerate from 0-60mph in 2.6 seconds – in 1993.

SSC Ultimate Aero
America’s top entry, the SSC Ultimate Aero packs some serious punch. With a 1,183bhp twin-turbocharged engine, the Aero has a claimed top speed of 273mph and will be tested against the Veyron’s record later this year. And its 0-60mph time is an explosive 2.78 seconds.

Saleen S7
Another American monster, the Saleen S7 was made famous in Hollywood blockbuster Bruce Almighty as Jim Carrey’s choice of car. And under that hood is a godly 7-litre V8 producing 750bhp and 700lb/ft of pulling power. For £302,000 you can say hello to 60mph in just 2.8 seconds.

Ariel Atom
A Ferrari-beating pocket rocket from Somerset? Oh yes. The supercharged 2-litre Ariel Atom weighs just 456kg and produces 300bhp. The two-seater sports car lapped the Top Gear test track quicker than the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 thanks to its brilliant handling and 0-60mph time of 2.88 seconds.

Gumpert Apollo
Besides the brilliant name and exotic looks, the Apollo has spaceship-like performance. With a 4.2-litre twin-turbocharged V8, the Gumpert produces 650bhp and 627lb/ft of pulling power. The 224mph German titan launches itself from 0-60mph in blink-and-you’ll-miss it 3.0 seconds.
