Sweden's ice bar invites Shanghai to chill
China's largest city Shanghai may be sweltering under muggy summer heat, but a new 'ice bar' looks set to be the coolest place in town.
Sweden's Absolut Vodka and Icehotel -- the hotel made of ice -- have launched the bar made of ice blocks in Shanghai's fashionable Huaihai street, organisers said Saturday.
The Icebar, which opened Friday, is the second outside Europe, and joins similar ventures in London, Milan, Copenhagen and Tokyo as well as the original in Stockholm.
The operator shipped 50 tonnes of ice blocks from Sweden's Torne River to maintain the venue at minus five degrees Celsius (23 degrees Fahrenheit).
"It guarantees the coolest experience for any guest in Shanghai," Seraph Chen, a spokesman for the bar, told AFP.
Customers are handed Eskimo coats, mittens and hats on entering but to prevent frostbite they are only allowed to stay for 45 minutes.
Stools are draped in reindeer skins and clients can peruse sculptures of polar bears and icebergs for what organisers described as a "trendsetting Arctic ice experience."
