Noisy neighbour gets 2 years prison for loud stereo
A noisy neighbour who blasted music for four years received his comeuppance Friday when a court in Spain's second city of Barcelona handed him a two-year jail term, Spanish Radio Cinco reported.
The man, named only as Juan S, kept neighbours awake until the early hours with his music, which the court heard was played at a volume almost double the permitted norm at night at his flat in the suburb of Montgat.
A supreme court decision overturned on appeal a previous Barcelona high court ruling from February last year that the man, who was additionally fined 730 euros (1,000 US dollars) Friday, should not be punished.
On occasion in a four-saga which began in 1999, the man played music at 60 decibels, double the permitted maximum under environmental laws, the court heard, and was given several warnings that went unheeded.
The original high court decision found that the man had not physically or psychologically harmed his neighbours.
But the appeal ruling found that there was sufficient risk of harm to put residents' health at risk.
