Lithuanian ex-president's bodyguard shoots at chef: report
A bodyguard of Lithuania's ex-president was under investigation Thursday after he allegedly shot at a chef who refused to serve him an early morning meal during a drunken night out.
The Lithuanian VIP protection department said it had opened a probe into an incident involving Major Jonas Paulikas, who watches over the Baltic country's 1990s head of state Algirdas Brazauskas.
According to Lithuanian media reports, the heavily inebriated Paulikas, 39, got into an argument with a chef who declined to serve him at a restaurant which was about to close at 5:00 am (0200 GMT) Thursday.
Paulikas allegedly responded by chasing the chef into the kitchen and firing seven shots with his SIG-Sauer service pistol.
None of the shots hit the chef and it was unclear whether Paulikas had intended to harm him.
Paulikas was arrested and tests revealed a level of 3.64 grammes of alcohol per 1,000 grammes of blood. In comparison, the blood-alcohol limit for drivers in Lithuania is 0.4 grammes.
Paulikas was later released but police confiscated his gun.
He subsequently checked into a hospital, according to media reports.
Paulikas, who could face criminal charges as well as the sack, has been working as an official bodyguard since 1991 although he was not on Brazauskas' protection squad for the former president's 1993-1998 term.
Paulikas has previously received an award for his SIG-Sauer handling skills.
