Hydrogen Powered car breaks 200MPH record
Ford has set the land speed record for a hydrogen-powered car – by breaking the 200mph barrier.
Piloted by Rick Byrnes, the super-green Ford Fusion Hydrogen 999 raced to 207.297mph on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah.
Loosely-based on the American sold Fusion saloon, the Hydrogen 999 is powered by an electric motor and 400kW hydrogen fuel cells – producing the equivalent of 770bhp.
And because the car runs on hydrogen harmful emissions are low, with the exhausts emitting only water vapour.
The Fusion’s name comes from the car Henry Ford drove when he broke the land speed record in 1904 – hitting 91mph.
The Bonneville Salt Flats are THE place to break land speed records.
Last year the RAF’s Wing Commander Andy Green was behind the wheel of the JCB Dieselmax, breaking the diesel land speed record by reaching 350mph.
An announcement is due shortly on a bio-fuel powered JCB which will attempt to beat the internal combustion speed record of 458mph.
Don’t forget to come back for all the developments.
