The World Championship leader sold the go-cart on eBay to raise money for charity, reports The Sun.
Lewis, 22, took the McLaren Mercedes kart for a 40mph spin after the auction ended - and crashed.
He damaged a rear axle when he crashed on a corner of the specially-built track in Central London.
McLaren will now have to repair the damage before the kart is received by its new owner.
A somewhat red-faced, but unhurt, Lewis said: "That was close. This track is tight."
